Diseases Of The Male Reproductive System

At the outset, it may be important to note the entire male reproductive system depends on balanced secretion of hormones.  Hormones are secreted by the Endocrine Gland in the body and they  stimulate or regulate activity in the  cells or organs. So, treatment of these diseases also depend of regularisation of functioning of these glands. The primary hormones that help the male reproductive system function include:

  • Follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) : Pituitary gland makes FSH. FSH produces sperm (spermatogenesis).
  • Luteinizing hormone(LH) :  This is also regulated by the Pituitary gland.  LH is necessary to continue the process of spermatogenesis.
  • Testosterone : Testosterone is the main male sex hormone. It helps in developing certain characteristics, including muscle mass and strength, fat distribution, bone mass and sex drive (libido).

Main diseases of the male reproductive system include –

  • Premature ejaculation.
  • Male infertility.
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  •
  • TUMOURS & CANCERS  which could be penile, testicular, or prostatic.

PREMATURE EJACULATION : can be defined as  semen expel the body always or nearly always   within 1 to 1.5 minutes of penetration, and as a result feeling distressed and frustrated. Premature ejaculation is common at first intercourse and is not a matter of concern.  However, if persist permanently, its causes could be Sexual abuse, stress in any area of life, Depression, Irregular hormonal level,  and Swelling or infection in prostate or urethra.

INFERTILITY : It can be defined as deficiencies of sperm production, which could be due to deficiencies in maturation of sperm; orchitis (acute inflammation of the testes often resulting from mumps), with destruction of the testes; obstruction of the passageways for sperm; abnormally low thyroid or high adrenal secretion; varicocele (enlargement of the veins of the spermatic cord); or formation of antibodies to sperm .

ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION : Erectile dysfunction is also known as Impotency. It is the inability to gain an erection to weak erections, premature ejaculation, or loss of normal sensation with ejaculation. It may be caused by subnormal functioning of the testes, by arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), by diabetes, by psychological factors, or by a disease of the nervous system.

PRIAPISM : Priapism can be defined as prolonged penile erection that is painful and not associated with sexual stimulation. The blood in the spaces of the corpora cavernosa becomes sludge like and may remain for hours or even days. In majority of cases its cause is not clear but in about 25% cases causes may be associated with leukaemiasickle cell anaemia, metastatic carcinoma

(cancerous development at a distance from the primary site), or diseases of the nervous system.

TUMORS  & CANCERS

Tumors can be defined as an abnormal mass of tissue that forms when cells grow and divide more than they should or do not die when they should. Tumors may be benign (non cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Benign tumors may grow large but do not spread into, or invade, nearby tissues or other parts of the body. Malignant tumors can spread into, or invade, nearby tissues. They can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems, also called neoplasm. All the Tumours of the penis are almost epithelial (covering or lining) origin and usually involve the foreskin (prepuce) or glans.

Penile : Primary tumours of the epididymis are not  uncommon, and most are benign. Penile cancer  takes place on the glans or inner surfaces of the prepuce, and metastases (secondary growths at distant parts of the body) occur through lymph vessels that travel from the groin and iliac nodes (nodes along the aorta and iliac arteries). The diagnosis is made by a biopsy of the lesion.

Testicular : The testicular tumours, are usually resemble the cells from which they arise of this type, include the hormone-secreting tumours. In general, these tumours are usually benign, and frequently arise in individuals with poorly developed or undescended testes .  majority of  malignant tumors  (cancer) of this type   do not reproduce cells resembling those of the tissue of origin. The major route of metastases for these types of tumours is via the lymphatic system. The lymph nodes in the groin and the mediastinum—the region between the lungs—are most commonly involved, but the lungs and liver are also frequent sites of tumour spread. The most common symptom first observed is painless enlargement of the testes. It is diagnosed by a biopsy, or ultrasound.

Prostatic : An enlarged prostate means the gland has grown bigger. Prostate enlargement happens to almost all men as they get older. An enlarged prostate is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is not cancerous, and it does not raise  risk for prostate cancer if treated in a timely manner.  It has been described in the diseases of the urinary system.  Prostate cancer is rare before the age of 50 but increases in frequency every decade thereafter. It is the third most common cancer in males.  Like most tumours, prostate cancer has various causes, but it is thought to be influenced by the male sex hormone androgen. The progress of the cancer is so slow that, by the time it produces symptoms of urinary obstruction or sexual dysfunction, metastasis has occurred in many cases, most frequently to the spine, the pelvic bones, or the upper portions of the thighbones. The diagnosis is made by  a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) or transrectal ultrasound (TRUS). If preliminary tests suggest prostate cancer, a biopsy is performed to confirm the diagnosis.

TREATMENT :

Diet for all male reproductive disorders :

  • Totally quit, Alcohol, Smoking, tobacco in any form and non-vegetarian food. Vegetarian Protein is more beneficial than non- vegetarian. Also quit junk food, processed food, stale food, fried food, fridged food and spicy food, sour things (fresh lemon is an exception), pickle etc.
  • Ensure that atleast one leafy green vegetarian is part of your daily meal. Increase intake of seasonal fruits and green vegetables.  Vitamin-C rich fruits are most beneficial such as Orange, Grape fruit, tomato, strawberry, pomegranate, banana and lemon are most beneficial. However, to avail proper benefits, instead of squeezing lemon in lentils, vegetable , salad etc , it must be taken with fresh water or warm water.  Either black salt and pepper or raw honey may be added to lemon water. If lemon in fresh water does not suit you take it in hot water like a tea.  Similarly, intake of banana with raw honey is more beneficial. Also add milk and buttermilk to your routine diet.
  • Water soaked dry fruits specially walnut is very beneficial.
  • In the evening, soak one spoon each of chia seeds, Fenugreek seed, and two walnut. In the morning make a glass of milk shake with water soaked seeds and walnut and take. While making the shake ½ spoon of  Cinnamon powder may also be added to this shake.  If milk does not suit you in the morning, take it in the evening/ night, and in  this case, soak it in the morning instead of previous night.
  • Yogasana  : Regularly do exercises and yoga.  Jogging, skipping, and walk are beneficial.  Following yogasana are specially beneficial.

  • Ardha Matsyendrasana, Baddha Konasana, Bhujangasana, Dhanurasana, Halasana, Janusirasana, Mayurasana, Naukasana, Paschimottanasana, Sarvangasana, and Uttanpadasana. Butterfly is also very beneficial.

  • Pranayama :   Bhrastika, Anulon Vilom, Bhramari and Agnisar Kriya.
