Anulom Vilom Pranayama

Method of Practice: Anulom Vilom Pranayama

  • 01
Sit comfortably in Sukhasana (Easy Pose). Keep your spine erect and your eyes gently closed. Rest your left hand on your left knee in Jnana Mudra (Gesture of Knowledge).
  • 02
Form Vishnu Mudra with your right hand by folding the index and middle fingers towards the palm. Close the right nostril with your right thumb and inhale slowly and deeply through the left nostril.
  • 03
Now close the left nostril with your ring finger, release the thumb from the right nostril, and exhale slowly through the right nostril. Try to make the exhalation longer than the inhalation.
  • 04
Inhale slowly through the right nostril. Then close the right nostril with your thumb and exhale gently through the left nostril.
  • 05
Continue this alternate breathing sequence for about 10 minutes. Beginners should start with 5 minutes and gradually increase the duration as they become comfortable.

Benefits of Anulom Vilom Pranayama

  • Anulom Vilom Pranayama is believed to purify the body’s 72,000 nadis (energy channels), thereby improving the flow of vital energy (Prana).
  • It calms the nervous system, helps reduce stress and anxiety, improves blood circulation, assists in regulating blood pressure, and enhances lung function.
  • It also supports the body’s natural detoxification processes and promotes healthy digestion.
  • Note: The concept of 72,000 nadis comes from the traditional yogic texts and represents subtle energy pathways rather than anatomical structures recognized by modern medicine.
