YAGYA CHIKITSA
An Infallible Natural Treatment for Tuberculosis
This book is based on Dr Fundan Lal Agnihotri’s research on tuberculosis (TB), conducted around 1940. It was first published in 1949. At that time, tuberculosis was one of the most serious and feared diseases, much as cancer became during the 1960s.
In recognition of his outstanding research, the British Government not only honoured Dr Agnihotri but also appointed him Chief Medical Officer of the Tuberculosis Sanatorium at Jabalpur. His research-based treatment reportedly achieved a success rate of approximately 80% at the sanatorium. Most of the remaining 20% consisted of patients who could not be accommodated within the sanatorium because of limited capacity. They were required to stay in rented accommodation nearby and, being unable to meet the associated costs, many discontinued their treatment before completing the full course.
His treatment protocol included the use of cow’s milk, ghee, buttermilk, and other dairy products. To ensure their purity and quality, the British Government sanctioned and maintained a cow shelter (Gaushala) within the sanatorium premises. Proper care, hygiene, and nutritious feeding of the cows were regarded as essential for producing high-quality therapeutic dairy products.
Following India’s independence, however, the Indian Government strongly objected to maintaining a Gaushala within the sanatorium and insisted that it be removed. Despite Dr Agnihotri’s efforts to emphasise the importance of maintaining healthy, well-fed cows and a hygienic environment for producing medicinal-quality dairy products, the Government remained determined to abolish the Gaushala and obtain these products from external sources.
Rather than compromise on this principle, Dr Agnihotri resigned from his position as Chief Medical Officer of the sanatorium and resumed private medical practice. He left Jabalpur and returned to Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, where he continued to serve his patients successfully for many years.
Dr Agnihotri passed away on 15 December 1962 at 4.00 p.m., at the age of 82.
DEV YAGYA
The Science and Therapeutic Value of Yajna
First published in 1941, this book presents a scientific analysis of Havan (Yajna) and explains its remarkable antimicrobial and disinfectant properties. Dr Agnihotri not only discusses the germicidal effects of Yajna but also explains the underlying mechanisms responsible for these beneficial properties.
The book highlights the role of Yajna in the prevention and management of infectious diseases and emphasises the health benefits of performing it regularly. It also provides detailed guidance on the preparation of disease-specific Havan Samagri, including the selection of appropriate medicinal herbs and other ingredients, their proportions, and the correct method of blending them for different ailments.
One of the distinctive features of this book is its specialised formulations of Havan Samagri for a wide range of diseases, together with seasonal formulations designed to promote health and strengthen the body’s natural resistance to disease.
The book also challenges several common misconceptions regarding the harmful effects of burning wood. It explains how, when performed scientifically and correctly, Yajna can transform these perceived disadvantages into health-promoting benefits. Rather than presenting Yajna merely as a religious ritual, the book offers a scientific, rational, and practical methodology that highlights its potential therapeutic value.
AROGYA SHASTRA
A Perfect and Tested Means to Stay Healthy All the Time
This book was first published in Vikram Samvat 2007 (A.D. 1950).
Dr Agnihotri firmly believed that the true responsibility of physicians and healthcare professionals is not merely to treat disease but also to educate people about the principles of healthy living, thereby helping them to prevent illness in the first place. The entire philosophy of this book is founded upon this preventive approach to health.
According to Dr Agnihotri, the foundations of both health and disease are laid during childhood. Until approximately the age of twelve, parents bear the primary responsibility for shaping a child’s health habits, alongside their general education. As children enter adolescence, however, they gradually develop their own understanding, beliefs, and lifestyle choices.
With this philosophy in mind, Dr Agnihotri dedicated this book particularly to young men and women. He hoped that, by understanding the fundamental principles of health, they would not only lead healthy and fulfilling lives themselves but also inspire their families, friends, and wider society to adopt healthier ways of living.
Although first published in 1950, the book explores many timeless principles of healthy living. In addition to explaining the fundamental principles of health, it discusses the importance and correct practice of physical exercise and Pranayama. It also explains how daily routines should be adapted to suit different seasons in order to maintain optimal health.
This book is a valuable source of practical health wisdom for anyone who sincerely wishes to enjoy a healthy, disease-free, and long life.
AYURVEDIC PRAKRITIK CHIKITSA
This book was first published in 1955. Its publication was delayed because, after completing the manuscript, Dr Agnihotri invited Shri Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar, the then Speaker of the Lok Sabha, to write its foreword.
Shri Mavalankar accepted the invitation on one condition—that he would write the foreword only after reading the entire manuscript himself. Owing to his demanding schedule and numerous official responsibilities, he could not estimate how long this would take. Nevertheless, true to his word, he read the book carefully from beginning to end, devoting whatever time he could spare amidst his official duties. As a result, the publication process took considerably longer than anticipated.
In his foreword, he wrote:
“In his effort to establish that everything existed in the Vedas, I find not so much a strictly scholarly method as a deep love and reverence for the Vedas. Whether every point he has made is explicitly found in the Vedas or not, what he has written is true. Accepting these principles could provide India, a poor country, with an effective, economical, scientific, and practical approach to maintaining public health and treating diseases.”
In this remarkable work, Dr Agnihotri presents documented evidence in support of his view that Ayurveda is the original source from which all modern systems of medicine have evolved. He also argues that every successful physician should possess knowledge of multiple therapeutic approaches. According to him, restricting oneself to a single system of treatment, prescribing medicines primarily for financial gain, and applying the same therapeutic approach to every patient—regardless of the nature of the disease or the individual’s constitution—while rejecting all other systems, is contrary to the true spirit of medical ethics.
Drawing upon nearly fifty years of clinical experience, Dr Agnihotri describes numerous therapeutic methods that he found valuable in the treatment and management of disease.
The book includes scholarly opinions from eminent authorities on contemporary systems of medicine, a history of natural therapy, and accounts of renowned allopathic physicians who adopted natural methods after witnessing their remarkable benefits. It also discusses Vedic hydrotherapy, the American New Hygiene Movement, the true causes of disease, the importance of diet and fasting, and a variety of natural therapeutic approaches. In addition, it provides detailed descriptions of natural treatments for numerous diseases.
Note: All four of these books will be made available on this website as FREE downloads as they are progressively converted into digital format.
Proposed Publications by
Dr Dhurendra Shastri Agnihotri
B.M.S., M.D. (A.M.), M.D. (Naturopathy), A.I.A.C.H. (Greece)
Since Dr Dhurendra Agnihotri’s revered father, Dr Fundan Lal Agnihotri, passed away while he was still in his early teens, he had only limited opportunity to learn directly from his father’s exceptional medical knowledge. Nevertheless, the knowledge he absorbed during those formative years inspired him to pursue a career in medicine.
He chose to study Homoeopathy and earned the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (B.M.S.).
During the final year of his medical education, his beloved mother was diagnosed with cancer. This tragic event had a profound impact on him. Despite receiving treatment from highly experienced physicians, widely regarded as experts in Homoeopathy and attending to nearly one hundred patients each day, she could not be saved.
This experience led him to question whether there were inherent limitations within Homoeopathy itself. Determined to find the answer, he undertook an in-depth study of the classical homoeopathic literature. In doing so, he discovered that even the early masters of Homoeopathy had emphasised the importance of supportive therapeutic measures, many of which were rooted in the principles of Naturopathy.
At the same time, he revisited the books written by his revered father, which he had first read during childhood with only a partial understanding. He also carefully studied the handwritten manuscript of an unpublished work entitled Diet Therapy (Aahar Chikitsa), which had survived despite becoming worn and fragile with age.
These studies led him to an important realisation. He concluded that, while Homoeopathy alone can be highly effective in the treatment of acute illnesses, the successful, comprehensive, and long-term management of chronic and serious diseases requires the integration of Homoeopathy with Naturopathy. Above all, he came to recognise that diet is the cornerstone of good health and that even the finest medicines cannot produce lasting results unless a patient’s diet is appropriately corrected.
Motivated by this understanding, he pursued advanced qualifications in Alternative Medicine (M.D. A.M.) and Naturopathy (M.D. Nat.), enabling him to integrate these disciplines into his clinical practice.
To further strengthen his knowledge of Classical Homoeopathy, he also received advanced professional training at the International Academy of Classical Homeopathy in Greece, founded and directed by Professor George Vithoulkas, recipient of the Right Livelihood Award—widely known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize”—as well as numerous other international honours.
Through this integrated approach, combining Homoeopathy, home-manageable Naturopathy, dietary correction, Yoga, Acupressure, and Herbalism, he has successfully treated numerous patients suffering from chronic and serious illnesses.
Although this realisation came relatively late in life, at the age of 79, he felt inspired by the Almighty to compile his clinical experience into a series of books. His aim is to ensure that this knowledge continues to benefit physicians, healthcare professionals, and patients for generations to come.
At present, this writing project remains in its planning stage. Nevertheless, it has been introduced here as a public commitment, with the hope that this declaration will inspire Dr Dhurendra Agnihotri to complete the work at the earliest opportunity.
We are confident that, once the task of making his revered father’s books available on this website has been completed, he will devote himself wholeheartedly to authoring these proposed books and gradually bring each one to fruition.
Since proper nutrition plays a vital role in both maintaining health and treating disease, and because no system of medicine can permanently cure serious illness without appropriate dietary correction, the first proposed book will focus on this subject. It will be followed by books on Yoga, Pranayama, and other essential natural therapies, and then by a volume on obesity—a serious condition that often contributes to the development of many other chronic diseases. Thereafter, books on the causes, prevention, and integrated management of other major diseases will be published one by one.
We pray to the Almighty to bless him with the strength, wisdom, and perseverance to complete this noble mission at the earliest opportunity.
