Instant Relaxation Technique (IRT) – Introduction
The Instant Relaxation Technique (IRT) is a simple yet highly effective yogic relaxation practice that quickly relieves physical and mental tension by consciously contracting and then completely relaxing the entire body.
To begin, lie comfortably on your back in Shavasana (Corpse Pose), keeping your heels about 1 to 1½ feet (30–45 cm) apart. For the initial phase of the practice, bring both heels together so that the inner edges of the feet touch. Keep the arms alongside the body with the palms gently touching the thighs. Close your eyes softly and align the entire body in a straight line.
The first stage of IRT involves systematically creating tension throughout the body, followed by complete relaxation.
Creating Tension Throughout the Body
Bring your awareness to your toes. Tighten the toes. Tighten the feet and ankles. Tighten the calf muscles. Pull up both kneecaps by tightening the thighs. Contract the thigh muscles. Tighten the buttocks.
Exhale and gently draw the abdominal muscles inward. Clench both fists firmly. Stretch both arms downward toward the feet. Inhale deeply and expand the chest. Hold the breath comfortably. Tighten the muscles of the neck. Tighten the chin. Clench the upper and lower teeth gently together. Tighten all the muscles of the face. Now tighten the entire body—from the toes to the head. Increase the tension… a little more… and a little more…
Now exhale slowly.
Release & Relaxation
Separate the feet again so that the heels are about 1 to 1½ feet apart. Move the arms slightly away from the body, keeping them parallel to the trunk with the palms facing upward, about 6 inches (15 cm) away from the waist. Completely release all muscular effort and allow the whole body to become loose and relaxed.
Experience the Contrast
Notice the contrast between tension and relaxation. Just a few moments ago, every muscle and every cell of the body was under tension. Now, every cell is completely relaxed. Experience the feeling of total relaxation, profound peace, lightness, and inner comfort. Enjoy the deep sense of physical and mental stillness.
